Elizabeth Craze received a new heart in 1984 at the age of 2 in an operation performed by Norman Shumway's surgical team. At the time of the surgery, she was the youngest patient to survive a heart transplant. Affectionately known as "Lizzy," she has led a normal life and played junior high school volleyball. She has also had a kidney transplant. She attended Whittier College, graduating in 2004. While at Whittier she was an active member of the Ionian Society, a local sorority at the college.
